After recovering, the series returned to production
Tale
A retired CIA agent is pursued by the agency he once worked for and is haunted by his own nightmares when a stranger suddenly visits him nearly three decades later. Production was halted in March 2020 due to government restrictions. During this time, Jeff Bridges was diagnosed with and treated for non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
The Old Man has a lot to offer
Bridges addressed his return from “the long weekend” in a podcast in July 2022. It was featured at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards (2024). Namely Jeff Bridges, John Lithgow, and the intrigue of a spy story with problems on both sides.
It sounds good and starts well
However, the heavy story weighs on the viewer’s understanding and patience. I think this show went overboard in trying to be deeply mysterious and complex. Complex storytelling doesn’t have to be this complicated.
I’ll keep watching, but it’s just not that engaging
It takes away from the realism that sells The Old Man. This may be a plus for some, but the bottom line is, I’ve watched 6 episodes and I have no idea what’s going on. The intentionally slow pace wore me out more than it made me fall in love with it.
